A working river town turned fast-growing community near the coast — what fiberglass pools offer Sneads Ferry families.
Design my pool — freeSneads Ferry began as a working fishing village on the New River and has grown into one of the busier communities along the Highway 17 corridor in Onslow County. It's popular with families and with military households stationed near Camp Lejeune and Jacksonville.
With a lot of newer neighborhoods and growing demand, it's a part of the coast where a well-built pool makes a real difference to how a home feels.
Coastal soils and summer humidity make a low-maintenance pool especially appealing here. Fiberglass needs fewer chemicals and less scrubbing than plaster, and its sealed surface stays comfortable underfoot.
The speed of a fiberglass install is a genuine advantage for families on the move — there's no months-long construction zone to live around.
The shell arrives finished, so the yard isn't a job site all season.
A non-porous gelcoat resists algae and pairs naturally with saltwater.
The shell moves with shifting ground instead of fighting it.
Modern gelcoat finishes resist fading and staining for decades with normal care.
Plenty of newer-construction neighborhoods, so HOA and community rules are worth checking early.
For military families, install timing can matter — fiberglass is the fastest pool type, though exact dates always depend on permits and weather.
Coastal, sandy soils suit a flexible shell well.

Probably not all of it, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling.
A pool is worth what the next buyer thinks it's worth. Some buyers want one. Some see maintenance they didn't ask for. Around here the next buyer might be on orders too, which makes it a real variable rather than a theoretical one. If you're buying this as an investment, I'd think hard.
If you're buying it because you've got three summers here and you want to use them, that's a different question and a much easier yes. What's true either way with fiberglass: no liner to replace on somebody else's timeline, and the maintenance is lower than plaster. Whoever buys the house isn't inheriting a project.
No. Fiberglass doesn't corrode, and the gelcoat is non-porous. The air off the water isn't doing anything to it.
Salt in the pool isn't a problem either. Fiberglass and salt chlorination get along fine, and it's what most people around here ask for. What salt air does go after is your equipment: the pump, the heater, the light housings, the hardware. That's a placement and rinse-down conversation, and it's the same for any pool within sight of the water.
Onslow County, out of Jacksonville. Sneads Ferry isn't incorporated so there's no town office in the loop. They run next-business-day inspections.
If your property touches the New River or a tidal creek, add a CAMA determination from the state. That's a separate review on its own clock, so it's the first thing to start rather than the last. Call me at 910-859-6222 if you're not sure which applies to your lot.
